Maeda Toshiie was one of the most celebrated warriors of the Sengoku period, famous as Yari no Mataza (Mataza of the Spear) for his exceptional skill with the weapon. Rising from a young page in Oda Nobunaga's service, he became one of the most trusted generals through decades of loyal service and battlefield prowess. His friendship with Toyotomi Hideyoshi, forged in their youth as fellow Oda retainers, would shape Japan's future. After Nobunaga's death, Toshiie navigated the treacherous politics between Hideyoshi and Shibata Katsuie, ultimately siding with Hideyoshi. He was rewarded with the wealthy Kaga Domain, founding a dynasty that would become the wealthiest daimyo family outside the Tokugawa. As one of the Five Elders appointed to guide Hideyoshi's young heir, his death in 1599 removed the last check on Tokugawa Ieyasu's ambitions.
